How To Know If You Have Termites

Posted on: 27 May 2021

Termites are a flying and non-flying pest that chews rotting or moist wood, feeding off of it and sharing it with the rest of the colony. These pests create mud tunnels around your home's foundation and across the ground, or even inside your home. If you have termites, there are signs you should watch out for. Termites are a pest that can be tricky to find, and by the time you do find them, the damage to your home is already done. Read on for a few signs you should keep an eye out for that could indicate you have this pest problem.

Sawdust Piles

Sawdust piles around your home may indicate a termite issue. Termites will chew through the wood and will chew through any rotting wood on your home, leaving nothing but sawdust in its wake. Sawdust piles can be caused by other pests as well, including carpenter ants and carpenter bees, although the difference is that termites will leave behind other signs as well.

Dead Termites

You may also see living or dead termites around your home, or wherever you see the sawdust piles. These pests look similar to flying ants, although their wings are different. If you spot a lot of living or dead pests, take a close look at them to see if they are termites or flying ants.

Mud Tunnels

You'll see narrow mud tunnels along your home's foundation, throughout your yard, or beneath other surfaces such as decks or patios. If you have mud tunnels, they could belong to termites. Other pests such as mud daubers can also make mud tunnels, although there is a noticeable difference between these two pests. Mud daubers are larger in size, and their bodies are an iridescent black.

Hollow Wood

If you have termites, you're going to notice that you have hollow wood throughout your home. You'll have wood that is not safe any longer for your home if you have a major infestation of these pests, as they can chew through a lot of wood in their lifetimes. These pests can make your home uninhabitable and in need of major repairs if they go undetected.

Termites are a tricky pest to catch at first, as they look just like flying ants. The difference is the damage they can do to your home. They can be a costly pest to have and difficult to get rid of. Hire a professional pest control company to help you get rid of these pests for you.

From Skunks to Bugs

Almost any animal can become a household pest if the situation is right. Skunks, for example, usually build their nests outdoors, but if you happen to have a hole in your garage wall, a skunk might move in and take advantage of your warmth. Rats can also move into your home, as can a variety of insects, from earwigs to ants. If you would like to learn more about detecting these pests, getting rid of them, and keeping them away, then read the articles here.
