Four Reasons Why You Always Have Ants In Your Home

Posted on: 18 December 2020

Do you have an ant infestation in your home? If so, there's a lot you should worry about. Ants can bite and inflict severe pain on the skin. Additionally, they are incredibly destructive. Ants can stealthily eat through your wooden furniture and leave it unusable. Thus, if you see these pesky creatures in your home, you should exterminate them immediately. However, before doing that, it's worth noting why you have the infestation. Below are some key reasons.

Food and Grease Spills

There's one thing all indoor pests love — food. Food spills, greasy counters, and open food jars can attract ants in your home. You may wonder, how do these creatures know there's food in your home? Well, like most insects, ants use chemosenses to detect food in their environment.

There are small bristles on an ant's body that enable it to detect smells. Thus, when you leave food spills on your counters or open jars in the cabinets, they attract the insects. Clean all surfaces after meals and use airtight containers to store dry foods. These measures will keep ants out of your home.

Leaky Plumbing

There are ant species known as moisture ants, which comprise ants that seek moist places to build their colonies. If you have leaking plumbing in your home, the area around the leak will make a suitable nesting place for moisture ants. Look out for ants under your sinks and toilets. If your window frames leak during the rainy season, they can act as suitable habitats for ants as well. You can keep these creatures away by fixing all plumbing leaks in your home. Check your door and window sills for leaks as well.

Dirty Trash Cans

How often do you clean your trash cans after dumping canned food jars, soda cans, and sugary leftovers? The sticky substances left under the cans from your garbage can attract ants. As aforementioned, ants have mechanisms for detecting sugars and other foods. Thus, if your trash cans and bins have sticky spills, you can expect a visit from the pesky insects. Even if you keep the trash cans outside the home, it is only a matter of time before the ants find their way inside the house.

Decaying Wood

Do you have old tree stumps in your yard? Or do you have uprooted stumps lying around in the garden? How about felled tree branches? Do you have water-damaged wood furniture around the house? All these can attract ants into your home. There's an ant species known as carpenter ants, which is attracted to decaying or damp wood. To keep these ants away, you need to get rid of all wet, decayed, or moisture-damaged wood.

Skunks, for example, usually build their nests outdoors, but if you happen to have a hole in your garage wall, a skunk might move in and take advantage of your warmth. Rats can also move into your home, as can a variety of insects, from earwigs to ants.
