Mice might be small, but they do a lot of damage when they take over your home. They gnaw on your belongings and walls of your home. They can destroy food packages in your cupboards, and their droppings and urine give your home a foul odor. Besides destroying your things, the mice can spread germs and disease. You don't want the pests in your home. Here are three things around your home and property that might be attracting mice.
1. Indoor Clutter
Mice may hide behind walls or in your attic, but if you have a lot of clutter in your home, the mice might move to your living space. The pests look for shelter, especially in the winter when it's cold, so a cluttered room with boxes and piles of clothes makes a perfect place to hide and breed.
Mice are particularly destructive when they tear up clothes, paper, and other belongings to make nesting materials. If you store a lot of belongings in your house, consider keeping things organized in plastic storage totes that snap shut so mice can't find an easy place to hide.
2. Outside Cover
Mice have a lot of enemies outside. They're easy prey for other wildlife if the mice are out in the open, so mice like to stay hidden in overgrown weeds, woodpiles, and yard clutter. If you have a huge yard you have a hard time keeping mowed and clear, consider creating a wide border around your house and outbuildings. With the grass cut short and no cover in the form of clutter or tree waste, mice can't approach your house stealthily.
3. Food And Water
If you keep food in your kitchen sealed, there will be fewer odors to waft around and attract mice. If you currently have a mice problem, you may need to seal boxed and sacked food in glass, metal, or plastic containers to keep it safe from mice until the pests are eliminated.
Also, be careful about eating food in the family room where crumbs or grease stains could be left behind to entice a mouse. Pet food is another potential problem if it's left out all night indoors or outdoors. If you cut off the food supply for the rodents, then they may not want to hang around your house.
Prevention is key for mice control so the pests stay out of your house. If mice do invade, take quick action by setting traps so you can eliminate them.
